Box ships run by the world's second largest box carrier Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) continue being sold for scrap, with the latest deal involving the MSC Pioneer concluded last week, market sources told Ocean Intelligence.
Aside from that deal, at least three other vessels were sold for scrap last week to Asian bidders, including a single-hulled products tanker and a Syrian dry bulk carrier.
Indian breakers secured the MSC Pioneer, along with the multi-purpose cargo ship Danoosh and products tanker Pavayacu.
The MSC-operated 1978-built MSC Pioneer is a 20,832 dwt fully cellular box ship with capacity for close to 1,500 TEUs.
The 1985-built single-hulled Pavayacu is a 25,243 dwt products tanker owned and operated by Peru's Petroperu and Petrolera Transoceanica SA.
Pakistani breakers meanwhile, secured the 1977-built 18,784 dwt dry bulk carrier Georgios 1, which was owned and operated by Syria's Altoun Shipping.
