EU Directive on low sulphur MGO comes into force in January 2010

CEPSA Marine Fuels, S.A. (CMF) says it is offering 0.1% sulphur content marine gas oil (MGO) at all its ports.

The Spanish bunker supplier said the final port to be included was Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

“At the beginning of December 2009, CMF started supplying MGO 0.1% in the port of Tenerife, replacing MGO 0.2%,” it said in a statement.

It added that CMF had already been offering the lower sulphur product in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, where it had met with “successful demand”.

“Thanks to Cepsa’s refineries at Tenerife, Algeciras and Huelva, CMF is able to guarantee the best quality of this and all products,” the statement added.

CMF pointed out that it was offering  MGO 0.1% “one month before” the European Union (EU) directive on the sulphur content of MGO came into force.

The directive (Directive 2005/33/EC, amending Directive 1999/32/EC) sets new limits on the sulphur content of MGO sold in EU ports.
