Weapons-carrying ship confirmed in Angola
Luanda has bunkering options.

The mystery over the destination of the COSCO ship An Yue Jiang was apparently solved today after the Angolan government announced that it would dock in Luanda.

Earlier reports yesterday suggested that it would make port in Lobito, after bypassing Namibia, but other reported sources had the ship heading eastward.

The Angola Press Agency reported today that the ship had received permission to dock in the country, but would not be allowed to unload its cargo of arms and ammunition originally destined to Zimbabwe via South Africa.

The ship would only be allowed to unload 'merchandise destined for Angola', without any further details, the report said.

The An Yue Jiang had apparently been sailing at a reduced speed to conserve fuel, leading to speculation as to where it might bunker.

There are a number of bunker suppliers serving vessels in Luanda, as well as off-shore options provided along the African West Coast.

A spokesperson for the Chinese government was reported saying earlier this week that the ship would return to China with its cargo.

In other reporting, a German bank, KfW IPEX-Bank, had apparently obtained a court order in Durban last week to impound the weapons onboard the ship because it was still owed money by the Zimbabwean government.

The An Yue Jiang, however, left Durban last Friday.
