DP World Chennai terminal sets record

DP World's Chennai Container terminal (CCT) has handled it one-millionth TEUs (twenty foot equivalent unit) this year, setting a new record for the Southeast Indian port.

“This is the first time that we have handled one-million TEUs,” DP World Chennai officials reportedly said.

The terminal handled its one-millionth TEU on Friday. So far this year CCT has handled has handled 1,001,445 TEUs against just 829,307 TEUs  n the whole of 2006.

CCT is the second Indian port to set a record this calender year.

Earlier in the year, the West Indian port of Jawaharlal Nehru (JNPT) crossed the 3 million TEUs mark for the first time.

The port handled a total of 3.3 million TEUs during the financial year 2006-07 against 2.67 million TEUs handled in 2005-2006.

The Port is expected to maintain the growth of above 20% during the financial year 2007-2008.
