The Port of Long Beach has promoted its chief environmental scientist Dr. Robert Kanter to a new role, the port announced today.

"Bob’s skills and experience will be an excellent fit for the port in this higher position," said executive director Richard Steinke.

The newly created position is Managing Director of Environmental Management and Planning. Kanter was formerly Director of Planning and Environmental Affairs.

The decision by the Board of Harbor Commissioners reflected the increased importance the port was placing on environmental issues.

"It updates our administrative structure to better reflect the high level of importance we place on environmental issues," Steinke said.

As Managing Director, Kanter will "oversee divisions involved in implementing the Green Port Policy and Clean Air Action Plan" as well as other environmental planning issues, according to the port.

The Green Port Policy includes various pollution-mitigation measures such as the vessel speed reduction scheme and live monitoring of air-quality levels in the port. The San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan was agreed with the Port of Los Angeles last year and involves substantial funding such as shore power infrastructure in both ports.

As Director of Planning and Environmental Affairs, Kanter was one of the chief architects of the Green Port Policy and the Clean Air Action Plan.

"His relationship with state and federal regulatory agencies and his work on the Action Plan will serve the port well as he takes on these new responsibilities," Steinke concluded.
