Singapore-based port operator, PSA International announced to Portworld today that the company's Voltri Terminal Europa (VTE) welcomed this morning the first of two new quay cranes.

The quay crane arrived by barge at the terminal, located near the city of Genoa in Italy, and unloading operations began shortly after. The second quay crane is expected to arrive by September, expanding VTE's container handling capabilities and bringing the number of quay cranes at the terminal to 10.

The largest of 'low height profile' quay cranes, VTE's new cranes are designed and manufactured in Italy by Reggiane Cranes and Plants, and are capable of handling vessels with up to 18 container-rows across.

"The quay cranes are part of PSA's commitment to invest and grow VTE, the major gateway to Central and Southern Europe," the company side.

VTE currently has five container berths and a quay length of 1,400 metres and a total operating capacity of 1.3 million TEUs.  Following expansion, the facility is projected to have seven berths, a quay length of 1,850 metres and a total operating capacity of two million TEUs.  According to PSA, the facility will eventually have 14 quay cranes.
